  • YHWH's emergence from the South; Shasu tribes and the divine warrior; YHWH, El and Shaddai; YHWH and the storm-god Baal; solarisation of the YHWH-cult

Abstract:

  • The aim of the study is to present the genesis of the name and concept of YHWH, primarily based on the results of the most recent research into the viewpoints of religious history. The significance of the Shasu nomads is primary in this regard, as the name YHWH occurred in connection with them in Egyptian inscriptions. It is highly likely that Moses and the group led by him in the southern areas (Sinai, Paran, Midian, Seir, Edom) encountered the YHWH warriors and the earlier form of the name YHWH. After entering the land of Transjordan and Canaan, the god-warrior YHWH adopted the attributes of the highest Canaanic god, El; moreover, it may be stated that a fusion – in the sense of religious history – was completed. In Genesis 49, Jacob asked for the blessings of El-Shaddai for Joseph. The Shaddai deities were the escorts of the storm-god Amurru. The next phase in religious history was the struggle between YHWH and Baal. Although the adoption of the attributes of the Canaanite storm-god was realised, the fusion was not perceived. The glorious divine warrior YHWH now also personified the storm-god, bringing rain and fertility. The YHWH divine image encountered the attributes of the Sun (solarisation) in Jerusalem, as attested by the archaeological finds from the period of pre-exile Israel.

Az abortusz megítélése megítélése az ókeresztény korban
The Early Christian View of Abortion

Keywords:

  • abortion; Septuagint; Church Fathers; early church councils; fetal protection

Abstract:

  • The study aims to prove that the views of the movements fighting for abortion freedom are not at all compatible with the Catholic tradition. It is true that in some early Christian works we come across the view that the foetus only becomes a human when it is formed. However, those statements are all related to that part of the Septuagint that the translators formulated under the influence of Greek philosophy, and they differ significantly from the original Hebrew text. Nowhere in the early Christian writings is there even a faint hint that early abortion was permissible. The foetus was considered as an object of divine providence from its conception; it was believed that the foetus already possessed all the characteristics that would develop later. The applicability and extent of the church punishment for abortion was therefore independent of the stage of pregnancy in which the abortion took place.

  • Nicene creed; theological influence; homoousios; Athanasius; Tertullian

Abstract:

  • Alleged Western influences on the historical and theological proceedings of the first ecumenical council in Nicaea (325 AD) have long been a matter of scholarly discussion. The idea of Western influence on the Nicene creed – and even the Western origin – has found much support. Scholars have attempted to establish a relationship between the strong emphasis on the divine unity by the early Western theologians like Tertullian, on the one hand, and in the Nicene creed on the other. In the last forty years, the theory of Western influence has been seriously questioned and has suffered severe criticism. The following brief study will examine the word 'homoousios', which is one of the most important terms in the Christian theological vocabulary, since it was used at the Council in Nicaea to express the divine consubstantiality of the Son with the Father. However, long and complicated debates have not yet produced any significant agreement among scholars concerning its origin and meaning. The study's further aim is to demonstrate that the proceedings of the council of Nicaea took place with considerable involvement of Western theology. At the very least, the Western influence was not excluded.

Abstract:

  • The legal training in Vienna changed greatly due to the reforms of Maria Theresa (1740–1780). She formulated a dual goal for the Vienna Faculty of Law in her study decree of 1753. One of her goals was to turn the institution into an internationally known scientific research and education centre, and the other was to train specialists with legal and administrative knowledge for the state. As a result of the centralising quest of absolutism, the state intervened more and more decisively in the administration of church law academies, which was the primary reason why Eger's university plan could not have been achieved. One of the goals of the Second Education Decree issued by Francis I was to unify legal education at universities and colleges. The imperial centralisation efforts aimed to establish the Austrian university system in Hungary because the traditional educational frameworks no longer corresponded to neo-absolutist imperial criteria.

Abstract:

  • Church legislation on the abuse of minors – and vulnerable persons – has become increasingly strict in recent decades. The scope of the offence has expanded, the age of the victims has increased, the statute of limitations has increased and the offence has become a reserved offence for the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. These are all the means and manifestations of the Church's desire to show zero tolerance towards the perpetrators of such acts. The study analyses the nature of the offence, the identification of the perpetrator and the victim, the possibility of limitation, the obligation to report an incident of sexual abuse and related misconduct and the obligations of the ordinary following a report.

Abstract:

  • The Catechesis, as an indispensable part of the preaching of the Word, is facing new social, anthropological and methodological challenges. The new Directory for Catechesis, published in 2020 by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, is the most authoritative catechetical document of our time. In its themes, problems and aspects, it can be seen as a directory for a new era. We find new thematic elements such as the ecological crisis, original beauty, missionary conversion, an inclusive catechesis for migrants and digital culture as the new missionary continent. The Directory's teaching enriches the inquiry into catechetical identity and leads us from the preaching catechist to the concept of the missionary disciple.

Keywords:

  • communio sanctorum (communion of saints); liturgy; ecumenism; reformation; Ugandan martyrs

Abstract:

  • The study focuses on the concept of the 'communio sanctorum' (i.e. the communion of saints) and its liturgical use, addressing important eschatological and ecclesiological questions from an ecumenical perspective. Through comparisons of different Christian traditions, it considers both the subjective and the objective genitive sense of the key Latin term of the study, 'communio sanctorum', examining its patrological and conceptual-historical background in detail. The Roman Catholic, Evangelical, Reformed and Orthodox liturgical vocabularies and their common biblical basis, namely Hebrews and Revelation, are taken into account. In addition to the Second Vatican Council and other papal pronouncements (e.g. the papal sermon on the Ugandan martyrs), special attention is given to the statements and practices of the Protestant churches. The study concludes that the communio sanctorum, that is, the confessors of the Christian faith belonging to different denominations, are the common saints of the one Church. Consequently, our saints, who pray with the angels and with us, encourage us to work together in this world for the unity of the Church.

Abstract:

  • One of the most significant and decisive figures in the recent history of the Diocese of Csanád was Bishop Gyula Móri Glattfelder, who assumed his ministry on 28 May 1911. Perhaps because it is not easy to collect the sources of his time, his career and his activities, his detailed biography is still awaited. This study is a presentation and a brief description of two relatively unknown manuscripts relating to Bishop Gyula Glattfelder's last years in Timisoara after the First World War. The manuscripts in the Archives of the Bishopric of Timisoara provide valuable information about the bishop's activities, his behaviour and his expulsion from Romania. This was all recorded for posterity by Gyula Glattfelder's direct colleague and confidant, Canon Augustin Pacha, later Bishop of Timisoara, with the validation of an eyewitness.

Keywords:

Abstract:

  • The study presents the preparatory process for the Ordinary Synod of Bishops 2023–24 in the light of documents reflecting on the listening and reflexive phases at different levels. For this reason, the current Synod process is first briefly described, and then the author summarises the insights of the documents presented on liturgical celebration. From all this, we can conclude that, although the interest of the current Synod of Bishops has not turned directly towards the liturgy, the processes of listening and discernment have already made clear the reciprocal determining relationship between the synodal ecclesial life and the liturgical celebration of the ecclesial communities. The study can thus contribute to the dialogue between ecclesiology and liturgical theology and to the reflection of the synodal process on the life of local churches.

Abstract:

  • The Christian man is homo viator, a pilgrim on the road. In the liturgy, we can meet the One who is the goal of our pilgrimage, already here on earth. The Church facilitates this encounter and communication between God and man in the liturgy by means of various non-verbal elements – elements that address the human body and its sense organs and that set man in motion. The person addressed sets out on a path, a pilgrimage towards the heavenly Jerusalem with the help of grace. In our study, we focus on three of the bodily movements in the liturgy, namely those observed in the offertory, the elevation and the Communion rites. In each of these ritual parts, we explore the inviting, pathbreaking power of the non-verbal elements.

Abstract:

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the changing proportions of the sacred and the profane elements of the Pentecostal pilgrimage in the secular press. I have searched the Hungarian and Transylvanian online articles for the most common themes and keywords to describe the general view of the event in 2022. It is clear that increasing numbers of profane entertainment programmes are being organised around the date of the pilgrimage. On the basis of the new articles, I have concluded that this Pentecostal pilgrimage has become an event for Hungarian nationalities to meet rather than a religious event.

  • pastoral planning; reform; challenge

Abstract:

  • The objective of the Vatican Council is to 'introduce the faithful into the life of Christ'. As urgent as it was in the world from 1962–1965, it is even more urgent in today's society and in our dioceses. In an interview during the world youth meeting in August, Pope Francis stated that the teachings of the Second Vatican Council have still not been implemented and that the church cannot be reformed without the gospel. It connected with Rahner's thoughts, according to which maintaining the old well-functioning habits was not enough, since they had been born to solve the challenges and problems of the given age and place. He believed that innovative movements should be in fruitful relationships with the authentic experiences of tradition; it was necessary to go back to tradition because there was a wealth of experiences that provided solution models for every era, but the fruition depended on whether it developed in the present and adapted to current conditions. In my study, I would like to apply such aspects to a life-like pastoral planning that responds to the challenges of the present world.

Abstract:

  • The reform initiative of the Transylvanian Franciscan Order dates back to 1879, the year of the ordination of our fellow monk Elek Csiszér. While experiencing the inner, loose monastic life, he asked for permission to go to a more austere community. He did not receive permission, but he did gain permission to live a more austere life. Along with some of his fellow friars, he began a reform. The reform was not implemented in one year – it is recorded that it took almost two decades to put the reform that involved the ministry of four provincials into practice. Prayer, the wearing of the habitus, fasting, money management and community life were common themes in the circulars.

Abstract:

  • A book published from the lectures of a conference held in the memory of the 70th anniversary of his death refers to Elemér Gyárfás as the 'civilian bishop'. He was a politician, a writer and an economist who earned that title through his efforts to ensure the rights of Roman Catholic Hungarians living in interwar Romania. As the lay leader of the Roman Catholic Status from Transylvania, he was often at the forefront of the negotiations with the Romanian state regarding the Roman Catholic school system and the economic situation of the Status. In Bucharest, he had several discussions with different representatives of the Romanian administration. In the document at hand from 1921, he wrote about negotiations with the government regarding the educational system and about topics relating to ecclesiastical affairs. The report is valuable, because we can see to what degree a compromise was possible with the Romanian state as well as the causes most important to the Status.

  • Diocese of Timisoara; Konrad Kernweisz; Orsova; church consecration

Abstract:

  • In communist Romania, building a church was an almost impossible undertaking, and building permits were rarely granted to anyone who wanted to build a church. The state law that stipulated that a new church could only be built if an existing one ceased to exist provided the opportunity taken by the Diocese of Timisoara to build the new church in Orsova. The state authorities allowed the new church to be constructed in Orsova because of the number of believers (there were Hungarian, German and Czech believers living in the town at the time) and because the construction costs were entirely financed from abroad. The construction of the new Roman Catholic parish church and the priest's residence in Orsova was one of the greatest achievements of the administration of Konrád Kernweisz, Ordinary of the Diocese of Timisoara – and perhaps of Communist Romania. The speech published here for the first time in print is not a sermon but was certainly delivered at the end of the consecration mass of the church in Orsova. The interesting detail about this text is that it is the first time that the symbolism of the church in Orsova was mentioned.
